Local Influencer Discovery

Use Instagram’s location search to find the people your neighbourhood already follows — then DM them a product-for-post swap. 10 minutes, zero cost.

Time: 10 mins
Tools: Instagram
Cost: Product / gift only
1

Search your town on Instagram

Open the Instagram search bar and type your town or suburb name. Hit enter, then tap the Places or Location tab to filter results to that area.

Search → type "Millburn, New Jersey" → Enter
Filter → tap Places tab
2

Tap the location & browse top posts

Select the location result. Instagram shows you the highest-engagement posts tagged in that area. These are your local micro-influencers — the accounts your neighbours are already paying attention to.

What to look for: High engagement relative to follower count. Someone with 2–5k local followers who gets consistent comments is more valuable than 50k ghost followers.
3

Identify 3–5 candidates

Click through the top posts. Check each profile for: local relevance, audience overlap with your customers, and content style that would suit your product. Pick 3–5 people to reach out to.

Sweet spot: Local mums, foodies, fitness accounts, community pages — anyone your actual customers already follow and trust.
4

DM with a product-for-post offer

Keep it short, specific, and generous. Lead with the gift, not the ask. Here’s the template:

Hey {first_name} — I run {your_business} here in {town} and I love your content. I’d love to send you {product/gift} on the house — no strings attached. If you enjoy it and feel like posting about it, that’d be amazing, but zero pressure. Keen?
5

Ship the gift, then follow up once

Send the product. Give them a few days to try it. Then send one light follow-up — not chasing a post, just checking they received it. Most genuine influencers will post organically if they like it.

Don’t: Send a brief, demand a timeline, or ask for approval rights. This is a gift — not a media buy. The trust is the value.
